Homestay in Japan

Homestay in Japan

We offer homestays to students and adults where you will stay with a Japanese family at a fraction of the cost of staying in a hotel. Our Homestay in Japan program offers you the opportunity to learn the Japanese language by practising with your host in a traditional Japanese home and family environment. You can go out and travel during the day and return to to your homestay for dinner. You can then practise your Japanese with your host family and also learn about the Japanese culture directly from your host.

You can also opt to attend Japanese classes during weekdays and during weekends you can enjoy Japan or your host city. Our Study Plus Homestay in Japan programme offers a stay and study duration from 1 week to 4 weeks. You can also request for a longer study period or request for a different programme to study besides the Japanese language (e.g. anime, manga, gaming). Many of our students continue their studies in a polytechnic or university of their choice after completing our homestay plus study programme.

What is a homestay?

It’s a chance to become a member of a Japanese family, study Japanese and of course, learn more about the culture, customs and lifestyle in Japan. Getting to Japan is as easy as buying air tickets; getting the chance to actually meet Japanese people is much more difficult. So why not make your own home away from home in Japan?

Edutravel’s homestay partner has 4,300 host families registered throughout Japan in such locations as Sapporo, Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Fukuoka. If you cannot decide where to go or which family to stay with we will assist you in every way we can to make sure your stay is pleasant and fruitful. If you are going for study plus homestay, we can also assist you to find the school which is nearest to your homestay.

Homestaying in Japan

Homestaying is a relatively recent custom in Japan, and there are only a limited number of families available. So, why are we at Edutravel able to provide you with homestay families?

  1. Many families have someone planning to study abroad in the future through a partnering study abroad center and are willing to open their house for a homestay.
  2. Many other families have someone who has returned to Japan after studying abroad and are willing to take in homestay guests.

Why should you homestay in Japan?

  1. It’s a great chance to improve your Japanese language skills.
  2. Staying with a Japanese family will give you a chance to learn about the culture and customs of Japan.
  3. Live the Japanese life! Life in Japan is better experienced in an actual home with a helpful host.
  4. Familiarize yourself with your host city e.g. how to take the public transport, where to shop for necessities, etc.
  5. Minors (below 18) can also homestay in Japan!

Study Plus Homestay

Just as the name suggests, Japanese language school is the place to go if you want to study Japanese full time. Unlike most universities or vocational schools, you can start from a complete beginner level, and generally study however long you would like. Many students go on to study at other schools after Japanese language school. Many schools also teach the unspoken “rules” and customs of Japan, giving you a deeper understanding of the country and people. The best thing about Japanese language school is, you can make friends from around the world, something that is usually not possible with just a homestay.
If you want to combine your homestay with Japanese classes, see our Study Japanese Language in Japan program.
