Did you know that 84% of teachers report that students lose skills or knowledge over the summer? This loss, often referred to as “summer learning loss,” forces teachers to spend nearly 22% of the school year re-teaching previously covered material. For Grade 9 students, two-thirds of the achievement gap can be attributed to these early learning declines.
Ontario’s Reach Ahead program is designed to help students combat these challenges and get a jumpstart on high school credits. Find out what Ontario’s Reach Ahead program is, how it works, and how you can benefit from Reach Ahead credit.
What Is Ontario’s Reach Ahead Program?
EduTravel’s Reach Ahead program offers motivated students a chance to jumpstart their high school journey by taking up to two secondary school credits during the summer before Grade 9.
According to Ontario Schools (2016, Section 2.5.2.1), the official definition of Reach Ahead is:
“Under exceptional circumstances, an individual student in Grade 8, with parental consent, may be given permission by the principal of a secondary school to “reach ahead” to take secondary school courses, either during the school year or in the summer prior to entering Grade 9.
The principal of the elementary school and the principal of the secondary school will decide, on a case-by-case basis, whether “reaching ahead” to take a secondary school course is in the best interest of the student. The principal of the secondary school will assume responsibility for evaluating the student’s achievement and for granting and recording the credit.
Students in Grade 8 may also have the opportunity to reach ahead to start earning community involvement hours prior to entering Grade 9.”
With approval from a student’s primary school, students can begin earning high school credits early, making it an ideal option for those who excel in independent learning environments and want to manage a more flexible schedule.
The Reach Ahead credit program is designed to enrich students’ high school education by allowing them to acquire credits before officially starting Grade 9. Whether students want to ease their high school course load later on or simply explore subjects that interest them, Reach Ahead provides the flexibility and support they need to succeed.
How Does Reach Ahead Work?
The Reach Ahead program in Ontario provides Grade 8 students with a unique opportunity to explore secondary school courses before they officially enter high school. Students can not only earn high school credits early but also do so in an engaging and immersive way.
These travel for credit programs allow students to learn while experiencing new cultures and environments—perfect for students looking to broaden their horizons.
Here’s how the Reach Ahead program typically works:
Eligibility and Course Selection
Students entering Grade 9 can participate in the Reach Ahead program with the approval of their school. Depending on their interests and educational goals, they can choose from a variety of subjects ranging from Geography to Civics and Careers.
Course Format and Structure
EduTravel’s courses blend experiential learning with academic instruction. In courses like Geography, students learn about forest management, sustainability, and mapping as they explore dense forests, limestone caves, and shimmering lakefronts, while participating in the CGC1W course.
Course Credits
Most Reach Ahead courses count as full secondary school credits. Students can earn credits depending on their eligibility and course selection. Offerings such as Canadian History in France not only fulfill course requirements but also provide unforgettable learning experiences outside of the traditional classroom setting.
Support and Guidance
Throughout the program, students receive support from their primary school, the travel organizer, and designated instructors. The program’s structure combines independent study, group activities, and on-site learning, making it an ideal choice for students who thrive in self-paced and interactive learning environments.
6 Benefits of Reaching Ahead for High School Credit
Enrolling in Reach Ahead programs provides more than just an academic boost. It equips students with the tools and experiences they need to thrive academically, personally, and socially. Here are some of the key benefits:
- Accelerated Learning and Early Graduation Options: By earning high school credits ahead of time, students have the flexibility to take advanced courses earlier in their academic journey or explore other interests that might not fit into a traditional high school schedule. This head start can lighten course loads in later grades, making it easier to balance schoolwork with extracurricular activities.
- Real-World Learning Experiences: These programs blend academic content with real-world applications, allowing students to see how their coursework connects with everyday life. Students participate in hands-on activities with qualified instructors in the field, and put their theoretical learning to real use. Similarly, the Canadian Geography course includes experiential activities like camping in Algonquin Park and kayaking, which bring ecological studies to life
- Enhanced College and University Applications: Reach Ahead credits showcase a student’s motivation and capability to handle advanced studies. Post-secondary institutions often look favourably upon students who have gone beyond traditional high school requirements. Participating in these programs not only adds a unique experience to a student’s application but also shows their dedication to learning through culturally immersive settings.
- Exploration of Interests and Potential Career Paths: By taking courses outside of the typical curriculum, students can explore subjects that align with their passions or potential career paths.
- Building Independence and Self-Confidence: Reach Ahead programs often involve a level of independence that goes beyond regular school courses. Students are encouraged to manage their time effectively, engage in self-directed learning, and step out of their comfort zones by travelling to new places or participating in new activities.
- Opportunities for Social Connections and Cultural Awareness: Students get to meet peers from different backgrounds and immerse themselves in various cultural experiences. These opportunities enhance global awareness and foster a broader understanding of social and cultural issues, which are valuable skills in today’s interconnected world.
