Feeling nervous about studying abroad is completely normal. In fact, it might be the most universal feeling among students who are considering it. The unknown is scary. A new country, new people, new culture, new language, new everything.
But here’s the thing: every single student who has gone to study abroad felt exactly the same way before they left. And almost none of them regret it.
We asked 7 of our students one simple question: what would you say to someone who is nervous about going abroad? Here’s what they said.

Alexandra, Seoul, South Korea
Alexandra had been dreaming about South Korea since she was 12 years old. But even with years of dreaming behind her, the nerves were still there when the time came.
“After about a month, you will feel fully settled and comfortable. That first month goes by very quickly, between adjusting to your new home, getting to know the university and meeting new people, and even learning small everyday differences. So just be prepared to gain an incredible amount of joy, new experiences, and unforgettable memories from this journey.”

Alicia, Cagliari, Italy
Alicia chose Cagliari for its combination of city life and easy beach access. Her advice is short, direct, and probably the most useful thing anyone could tell a hesitating student.
“Don’t overthink it. That was one of the best pieces of advice I received myself. It’s easy to create a lot of scenarios in your head about how things might turn out, but things always work out in the end. You will find your way.”

Camille, Bangkok, Thailand
Camille wasn’t a first-time traveller. She had already done exchange programmes in South Korea and Cambodia before choosing Bangkok for her master’s degree. She knows better than most what stepping out of your comfort zone really means.
“It’s the best time of your life to try this experience. Going out of your comfort zone to create a new one is the best thing that can happen to you.”

Emma, Bali, Indonesia
Emma chose Bali for her gap year after feeling unsure about what direction to take after her degree. She found her answer on the island.
“Don’t think too much about it, just take the leap and go for it. If it’s not the city that’ll make you feel like home, it’ll be the people you’re surrounded by, or the food you eat, or even the landscapes you see. The Asia Exchange team is always available if you need literally anything. So just go for it and enjoy your time.”

Isabella, Bangkok, Thailand
Isabella moved to Thailand with her three children, drawn by the culture, the warmth, and a country she already felt connected to. Her advice is both practical and reassuring.
“Take the leap. You won’t regret it. You’ll grow as a person, gain new perspectives, and build both academic and life experience. You’ll also create friendships and memories that last a lifetime. And if it doesn’t feel right, home is never more than a flight away.”

Lara, Bali, Indonesia
Lara visited Bali as a tourist the year before her semester abroad and fell in love with the island. She came back to actually live it.
“Feeling nervous is completely normal and honestly part of the whole experience. Before leaving, there are so many unknowns, and that can feel overwhelming. But once you arrive and give yourself a few days to settle in, that nervousness quickly turns into excitement. Don’t overthink it too much, step out of your comfort zone, and just go for it. You’ll grow so much from the experience.”

Leon, Seoul, South Korea
Leon wanted to experience life outside of Germany and specifically chose South Korea for its culture, food, and the opportunities at Hanyang University. His advice might be the most direct of all.
“Just do it. If you are curious about what life abroad feels like and you are in the privileged position of being a university student, take the leap. If you don’t try it now, you might never get the chance to experience something like this.”
Seven students. Seven different countries. Seven different stories. But one shared message: the nervousness you feel before going abroad is completely normal, and it does not last.
What does last are the friendships, the memories, and the version of yourself you come back as.
