We’re kicking off a special February—Leap Year means having an extra day this month. We might be biased, but we think that extra 24 hours is a perfect bonus day to apply for scholarships. You can find all of our open programs on the Browse Scholarships page, and to start off the month we’re featuring scholarships for aspiring scientists in Washington state; military veterans interested in a teaching or counseling career; and students whose families have been impacted by cystic fibrosis.
Andreas Heiberg Scholarship
Andreas Heiberg was born and raised in Figgjo, Norway, moving to Zurich, Switzerland as a young man to earn a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the prestigious ETH University. He was recruited by Boeing and moved to Seattle to work on the company’s supersonic transport project; after developing his expertise in logistics planning, he embarked on a 40-year career with the Polar Science Center, becoming a respected name in polar research and exploration.
When Andy passed away in 2021, his family established the Andreas Heiberg Scholarship to celebrate his life and enthusiasm for learning. In honor of his adopted home and passion for practical knowledge, the Andreas Heiberg Scholarship provides $3,000 awards for up to 15 students in Washington pursuing degrees in eligible non-medical STEM fields.
To apply, you must be a high school senior, graduate or current college undergraduate living in Washington, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent). To be eligible, you must also be planning to enroll in fulltime undergraduate study in a non-medical STEM field at an accredited four-year college or university in the state of Washington for the entire upcoming academic year.
Andreas Heiberg understood the importance of scientific and mathematical principles in developing and implementing solutions to practical problems. He would be gratified knowing he is helping deserving students continue their education.

Heroes in Education: Military Veteran to Classroom Teacher Scholarship
The Heroes in Education Military Veteran to Classroom Teacher Scholarship provides financial assistance to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who are pursuing a career in K-12 education or counseling.
To apply, you must be an honorably discharged veteran of an eligible branch of service, including:
- Air Force
- Air Force Reserve
- Air National Guard
- Army
- Army National Guard
- Army Reserve
- Coast Guard
- Marines
- Navy
- Navy Reserve
(All recipients must be able to provide a Certificate or letter of Eligibility from the Department of Veterans Affairs or DD214 or other document of service stating “Honorably Discharged” before awards are disbursed.)
In addition, you must be pursuing a degree in an eligible field—including career and technical education certification, teaching, education, counseling, psychology, and social work— plan to seek a career in a K-12 school system.
All applicants must also be high school or GED graduates, current post-secondary undergraduates or graduate level one students who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate- or graduate study for an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree at an accredited two- or four- year college or university or vocational-technical school for the entire academic year. Finally, you must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale and must be using any eligible military education benefits. Financial need will be considered.
If you receive a Heroes in Education Military Veteran to Classroom Teacher Scholarship and you’re attending a two-year/vocational-technical school, you’ll earn $5,000. Recipients attending four-year institutions will earn $10,000 awards, and all awards are renewable up to four years or until a bachelor’s or master’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on satisfactory academic performance and fulltime enrollment in an eligible field of study.

Vertex Foundation Scholarship Program
The Vertex Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation, seeks to improve the lives of people with serious diseases and contribute to the communities where Vertex Pharmaceuticals is located through education, innovation and health. Established in 2017, the Foundation is a long-term source of charitable giving and is an extension of Vertex’s corporate giving commitment. To help families and caregivers who have been impacted by cystic fibrosis (CF), the Vertex Foundation Scholarship Program offers awards of $5,000 to eligible students impacted by CF who are pursuing two-year, three-year, four-year undergraduate and graduate degrees. Since 2017, the program has awarded over 550 scholarships to members of the CF community.
Applications to the Vertex Foundation Scholarship Program are open to high school seniors, college and technical school undergrads and graduate students in the U.S. and Canada. Applicants must either be diagnosed with CF or be an immediate family member (sibling, child, spouse or caregiver) of someone diagnosed with CF. The scholarship awards can be used for part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate study in any field at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college, university or technical school.
