What is the Pre University Summer School?
The Pre University Summer School is open to students of 15-18 years old who would like to learn more about their ideal study choice at university and beyond in an international environment. The university is offering courses specialising in Business, Management & Economics, Law, and Medicine and Healthcare and the introduction of our Biosciences programme focusing on the use of Ecology to save our planet.
Designed to give students an insight into their possible future at university with the opportunity to look at careers and develop practical skills, while learning from each other’s different international perspectives.
A key aim throughout the programme is for students to develop the life skills required within Higher Education and in professional life, including intensive studies of global challenges facing these careers – from outbreaks of disease in developing countries to economic crashes and international security.
We aim to provide each student with an informed opinion on their future course of study, how best to approach it and potential future professions.
Alongside the academic programme, we provide an exciting and inclusive social programme to encourage students to get to know each other and make connections internationally that could last for life. The activities are designed to give students a chance to try something new and push their own boundaries or simply explore and make new friends.
Why Join the Pre University Summer School?
The programme is an intensive academic experience to help students prepare themselves for their future and start their Higher Education careers with confidence.
Going into Higher Education is a big step for any student, particularly one who may be moving a long distance from home to do so. The programme is designed to show students what life can be like as a student and help them prepare for the application process to make the transition as stress free as possible. From help with personal statements and how to choose a university course to real life skills such as cooking and budgeting, we aim to help students face the future with confidence.
Each academic pathway includes field trips, sample lectures and sessions on what they may expect to learn about during a degree as well as visits from professionals to show everyone what life is like after their studies have finished. We have found this to be key in giving students realistic expectations about job satisfaction and how different styles of courses can affect their job search and prospects. We also incorporate a situational learning project into the programme with a focus on a simulation of a potential situation the students may face in their future careers to allow them to see how they would cope and how well they work with others in their group.
Another key benefit of joining the Pre University Summer School is the sheer internationalisation that occurs when together with students of the same age and interests but from over 18 different countries worldwide and spanning every continent apart from Antarctica!
In order to fully benefit from the international perspectives the students are surrounded by, we organise a very full evening programme to give the everyone a chance to socialise and grow together as young adults away from the classroom. Activities include local cultural site visits, group activities such as escape rooms and quizzes, and even a surfing lesson! This also gives the students a chance to learn to network early in their careers and make connections that can last for life all over the world.
In order for our students to fully exploit the opportunities on the programme, it is vital that all students feel safe and happy. This is of paramount importance to us and we ensure this is the case at all times through the use of our dedicated International Summer School team with support from our Exeter Student Ambassadors as group leaders. Our Exeter Student Ambassadors are specifically trained to help the students and supervise them whilst supporting our staff in running the programme which means that our students can learn from people who are experiencing their potential future right now!
